Karim Gillani: Edmonton singer enchants with Sufi tunes

EDMONTON – Ever since language and music came together, love has been a ubiquitous song theme. But singer Karim Gillani hopes to impart a multi-layered take on the word.

As an expressive musician, an expert ethnomusicologist, teacher, follower of Islam and family man, Pakistani-born Gillani is grateful for the many connections he’s made over his decade-plus living in Edmonton. Now he’s harnessing all that with a cast of more than a dozen musicians in a delightful recording that crosses musical boundaries and seven centuries of poetry to deliver its message.

“Using love rather than hatred to create a dialogue is central to the songs,” he explains, “but it is also about embracing diversity and pluralism, about appreciating tradition and the esthetic of beauty in different parts of the world. It’s about moving beyond the clash of ignorance, stereotyping and Islamophobia, and appreciating each other on a basic human level.”
