Comedy Knight: Laurier economics student in the standup business
By Jeff Hicks for Waterloo Region Record
WATERLOO — In Arabic, Sohail Chatur’s first name means easygoing.
“Oh, the irony,” deadpanned the Wilfrid Laurier University economics student as he devoured a plate of fish and fries about an hour before showtime.
His cellphone rang. His fork — haddock hanging mid-prong like a dangling punchline — dropped to his plate as he stood in a cosy, little British pub on a Wednesday night.
“I have to take this,” he said.
Of course he did. A Biblical rain fell outside and he worried his soggy young comedians might get washed away en route to the Churchill Arms. Two by two, they showed up in their soggy Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles T-shirts.
Chatur, 19, isn’t just the host and opening act. This studious Mississauga son of a warehouse supervisor dad and a government mediator mom is also the promoter.
