Capstone course and volunteer experiences enrich Anisha Mawji’s education

Being the first person to earn an Honours Degree in Music from the University of Calgary is an accomplishment that stands out for Anisha Mawji during her four years as an undergraduate student.
The honours project, which Mawji pursued through a capstone course in the Department of Music, is already having an impact on schoolchildren. Working closely with her music professor, Rod Squance, Mawji helped create a curriculum in world music for elementary schools. During an eight-week teaching placement, Mawji’s world music lessons were implemented in a Calgary elementary school. The project was well received and the music teacher will be incorporating the world music genres explored in her teaching repertoire in the next school year. Mawji has also been talking with other interested elementary school teachers about implementing the curriculum in their schools.
Yet, Mawji was not content to focus solely on music during her undergrad. Her interest and involvement in the Kids Grow program, a student-led project facilitated through the Centre for Community-Engaged Learning (CCEL) that engages children in the topics of gardening, food production, environmental stewardship and community building, has led her in a new direction.
