Arthur Kaptainis, Special to Montreal Gazette
Collaboration was the reigning principle Sunday afternoon at an a cappella joint meeting of VivaVoce and the visiting Elmer Iseler Singers under their respective music directors, Peter Schubert and Lydia Adams. All 31 voices blended magnificently in Mendelssohn’s Sechs Sprüche, Op. 79, Biblically inspired motets in moods ranging from joyous to solemn. What a sound!
Of course, sonority is not enough, or so I am supposed to say. But it was all I needed to enjoy the 19-strong Elmer Iseler Singers in a routine Alleluia by Eric Whitacre, and Reflections on Light, an evocative exercise in long-tone minimalism by Hussein Janmohamed. Voices in the latter were assembled around Redpath Hall, a circumstance that surely increased the difficulty. No flaws could be heard.
