Enlightened Encounters Show Comes to Vancouver this August
Vancouver sitarist Mohamed Assani and British tabla maestro Shahbaz Hussain are leading exponents of Indian Classical music. Their recent performances at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, and representing the museum in Dubai were received with great excitement and appreciation. The artists now bring their show to Vancouver with an intimate concert/mehfil presenting the classical music of Northern India and Pakistan.
Mohamed Assani is a celebrated Ismaili sitar player, known for his creative musical collaborations with artists of all genres. He has performed across the globe – including in the UK, Canada, USA & Dubai – with orchestras, string quartets, hip hop artists, DJs, world music ensembles, jazz artists, Indian and Western classical artists—and, of course, solo.
According to the Georgia Straight Newspaper, “Assani is both a musician who’s deeply rooted in the artistic traditions of South Asia and a one-of-a- kind innovator who’s bent on ensuring that those age-old forms will survive, and grow, in the modern era. Visiting British artist Shahbaz Hussain is regarded as one of the leading tabla virtuosos of his generation. He was given the honorary title “Son of Lahore” by the government of Pakistan for his services to the art of tabla. Shahbaz regularly travels across the world to present performances, including throughout Europe, North America & the Asian subcontinent. He has performed in many prestigious venues, including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., Lincoln Center in New York and London’s Royal Albert & Queen Elizabeth Halls.
