About Saiyad Imamshah

Saiyad Imamshah, one of Pir Hasan Kabirdin’s sons, is reputed to have been a charismatic preacher and an author of numerous interesting ginans. He is revered by the Imamshahi community, named after him, who do not recognise the Ismaili Imamat, while revering the same corpus of ginans attributed to the above-mentioned Pirs and, of course, to Imamshah himself. Modern scholars, however, are of the opinion that the origin of the Imamshahi sect is to be attributed not to Imamshah but to his son, Nurmohamed Shah (or perhaps to other descendants of his), and retrospectively projected onto the figure of Imamshah himself.

Listen to the ginan Ada thaki ek suna nipaya – Attributed to Saiyad Imam Shah

Primordially
  Was brought forth the Void.
  From the Void
  Was brought forth the Word.

  He will proceed to hell,
  He who sports the earring
  But has no hold
  Over his self.

  He smears ash,
Makes people fall at his feet,
  But knows nothing
  Of the Word of perfection.

  He blows the horn,
  And splits the ear,
  But knows nothing
  Of the divine Word.

  He wears his hair long,
  A wild and shaggy mat,
  But knows nothing
  Of salvation's mystery.

  The sixty-eight shrines
  Are rock and water -
  You will gain nothing there.

  Says Pir Indra Imamshah,
Listen, my jogi friend, if only
  You found a master,
  Your problems
  Would come to an end.

About the White Hat

The White Hat Ceremony is a long-standing tradition in Calgary, a symbol of the Western hospitality and good cheer we like to share with visiting guests.

The white Smithbilt hat has been bestowed on numerous celebrities and dignitaries on their visits to our city since the 1950s, when Calgary’s Mayor, Don MacKay, started the tradition.

MacKay was inspired by the white hat after traveling to Toronto with 250 excited Calgary fans to see the Stampeders compete in the 1948 Grey Cup (the Canadian Football League championship game). The exuberant group sported white cowboy hats, which soon became a hit with easterners, and presented a hat to Toronto’s mayor as a way of saying ‘thanks’ for the city’s hospitality. Years later, when he was mayor of Calgary, MacKay began distributing them to visiting dignitaries.

Today, Tourism Calgary and The Mayor’s Office welcome dignitaries visiting Calgary with a special white hat ceremony. If you’re bringing someone to the city and would like to request a ceremony, please contact Tourism Calgary for more details.

His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan was ” white hatted” on his first visit to Calgary by Mayor Ralph Klein.

UAE’s story, one image at a time, through the lens of royal photographer Noor Ali Rashid

$

0

First recognised as an official photographer by the British in 1959, Rashid built a reputation as the royal or Sheikhs’ photographer. He was there for every milestone in the UAE’s history, capturing the ordinary and the extraordinary.

His documentary and historic images, along with his more artistic side, including images only now made public, can be seen at Lasting Impressions, an annual exhibition at Sharjah Art Museum to recognise the significant contributions of artists who have changed the face of contemporary art.

UAE’s story, one image at a time

By Rym Ghazal for The National UAE. Published November 9, 2014.

This year is the fifth exhibition in the series and serves as a retrospective of Noor Ali Rashid (1929-2010), who is considered the father of photojournalism and street photography in the UAE and served as royal photographer at the invitation of the late Sheikh Zayed.

“One of the things I hope this exhibition of my father’s work illustrates is that he was more than just a royal photographer …

I wanted to demystify that image, and show his artistic and personal touches in every photo, where often you can see his sense of humour and how each photo has multiple stories. The longer you look, the more stories a single image tells you.

My father left behind more than a million photographs and images and our family has formed the Noor Ali Rashid Archives as a way to accumulate, preserve, catalogue and present the legacy of images that so adeptly captured the formative years of our nation in the faces of everyone from the man fishing in the creek to Sheikh Zayed himself.”

- Shamsa Noor Ali Rashid, Chairperson of the Noor Ali Rashid Archives and Curator of the Exhibition.

On display until December 6 are 238 images, selected from 350,000 photos that have been digitised so far. Both black and white and colour, they are divided into different themes, such as “portrait of a life”, a compilation of Noor Ali Rashid’s earliest and largest known bodies of street photography from the 1940s to the 1970s that include souqs, life on water, architecture, travellers, crafts, animals, celebrations and children’s toys.

Next is Building the Nation, delving deep into the photographer’s encounter with the developing story of the UAE and the encounter with Sheikh Zayed that resulted in him becoming royal photographer.

Traveling the World brings the public never viewed photographs of my father’s travels to more than 35 countries, from the coronation of the shah of Iran to a candid portrait of the American star Ava Gardner on a 1950s trip to Karachi, Pakistan,” said Ms Rashid.

During the visit, which included a ceremony marking the restoration of Humayun’s Tomb and the inauguration of the Aga Khan Academy, Hyderabad, Mawlana Hazar Imam met with senior government leaders at the national and state levels. Hazar Imam also devoted a considerable amount of time to meeting with the Jamat of Western India, who gathered at Hasanabad Jamatkhana.

Yesterday evening, Mawlana Hazar Imam attended a banquet hosted in his honour by the Jamati institutions of India. Renowned musicians Salim and Sulaiman performed at the dinner, accompanied by six youth from across India – one from each region of the country where the Jamat has a presence.

At the dinner, Jamati leaders presented Mawlana Hazar Imam with a gift of a bronze incense burner. Dated to the 18th or 19th century, the vessel exemplifies the fine metalwork produced by the craftsmen of Mughal-era India.

Being the first person to earn an Honours Degree in Music from the University of Calgary is an accomplishment that stands out for Anisha Mawji during her four years as an undergraduate student.

The honours project, which Mawji pursued through a capstone course in the Department of Music, is already having an impact on schoolchildren. Working closely with her music professor, Rod Squance, Mawji helped create a curriculum in world music for elementary schools. During an eight-week teaching placement, Mawji’s world music lessons were implemented in a Calgary elementary school. The project was well received and the music teacher will be incorporating the world music genres explored in her teaching repertoire in the next school year. Mawji has also been talking with other interested elementary school teachers about implementing the curriculum in their schools.

Yet, Mawji was not content to focus solely on music during her undergrad. Her interest and involvement in the Kids Grow program, a student-led project facilitated through the Centre for Community-Engaged Learning (CCEL) that engages children in the topics of gardening, food production, environmental stewardship and community building, has led her in a new direction.
