Sheniz Janmohamed’s new book “Firesmoke” launched

Sheniz Janmohamed's new book "Firesmoke" launchedSheniz Janmohamed’s second collection continues the poet’s journey, tracing the inception and annihilation of sacred fire. In a series of highly evocative, personal poems, Firesmoke explores the meaning of truth and the self, finding them both in form and emptiness. In her unorthodox, broadminded quest for understanding, Sheniz evokes the teachings of Sufism, acknowledges the restorative power of the Mother Goddess and honours the alchemy of nature. Life and death do not exist without each other, just as fire produces both ash and smoke, one falling to the ground, the other rising into space.

By Noor Nazzal, Staff Reporter, Gulf News. Published: 21:00 October 23, 2014

Sharjah: The late photojournalist Noor Ali Rashid, who served as royal photographer to Shaikh Zayed, is being honoured through the fifth ‘Lasting Impression’ exhibition, which will showcase his work at the Sharjah Art Museum from October 22 to December 6.

The exhibition was inaugurated on Wednesday by Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.

Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, attended the inauguration.

Through his work over seven decades (1929-2010), Rashid, who is considered the father of photojournalism in the Middle East, accumulated a portfolio of more than a million images documenting everyday scenes and extraordinary historic events in the UAE’s history.

Walking through the exhibition, you can get a glimpse of how the UAE, its people and Rulers lived before the federation was formed.

The exhibition has been installed in three thematic sections to showcase the breadth of the photographer’s extraordinary career. ‘Life As It Was’ nostalgically depicts a slow paced way of life in the 1960’s markets, in the desert and even on the water. ‘Building of a Nation’ documents the formative years of the UAE, from the Trucial States years through the federation era. The third section, ‘A Glimpse of the World’, displays never before viewed photographs from Rashid’s international expeditions to around 35 countries.

The Lasting Impressions series was conceived in 2010 as a platform to showcase the works and recognize remarkable artists from the UAE and the wider region, who over the span of their lifelong practices, have influenced the landscape of Arab art and left behind a moving legacy.

Celebrated as the father of photojournalism in the region, Noor Ali Rashid (1929 -2010) amassed a collection of over a million images during his six decades of capturing the ordinary moments and the extraordinary events in the history of the region. Lasting Impressions offers a fresh perspective on Noor Ali Rashid’s lifetime of achievements by drawing upon both, iconic and never before seen images.

“Our father dedicated his life to the country, to its leaders and its people. Preserving his lifetime of work was not only his wish but also our privilege and responsibility. At the Noor Ali Rashid Archives, we have dedicated significant resources and worked diligently for the last five years to preserve his work so that it can be enjoyed by all, for generations to come.”

- Shamsa Noor Ali Rashid, Rashid’s daughter and chairperson of the Noor Ali Rashid Archives

By WAM/Majok. Published: 18/10/2014 08:22:02 PM

SHARJAH, 18th October, 2014 (WAM) – Sharjah Museums Department has announced that Lasting Impressions: Noor Ali Rashid, will be on view from October 22, 2014, through December 6, 2014. The exhibition, developed in collaboration with the Noor Ali Rashid Archives, is the first, extensive retrospective of Middle East’s pioneering photojournalist.

The exhibition is organised into three thematic sections to showcase the breadth of Noor Ali Rashid’s repertoire.

  1. The section ‘Life as it was’, provides a glimpse of an era bygone where the photographer turns his lens to patterns of everyday life. Images in this section are an artistic and nostalgic documentary of a simpler life lived in the desert, on the water and in the souqs of 1960s. This section also has images selected from the Architecture series and from the Celebrations series. They depict his eye for capturing unusual perspectives.
  2. The section ‘Building of a Nation’ spotlights Noor Ali Rashid’s deliberate sensitivity and his sense of responsibility in documenting and recording UAE’s history in the making. From the Trucial States, to the pre-Federation and Federation eras, and the years thereafter, these images are an important documentation of progress, accomplishments and momentous occasions in the young country’s life.
  3. The third section, ‘A Glimpse of the World’, for the first time exhibits photographs from Noor Ali Rashid’s International series. A collection of images from his travels to 35 different countries around the world includes his observation of the streets around the world, important international events, as well as captured images of world leaders and celebrities.

As the Royal photographer of the UAE, Noor Ali had an unprecedented access to places and events that others simply did not. Hence, his photographs from the UAE Leaders series provide a unique perspective on the fathers of this nation and their relationships with each other.

“Through this year’s exhibition UAE residents and visitors alike will learn about the country’s history and cultural heritage through the prolific work of the photographer Noor Ali Rashid. With his camera as his constant companion, Noor Ali meticulously documented the historic firsts and many significant moments of our country’s early decades. Anyone who visits Lasting Impressions will leave with a richer understanding of our history thanks to the legacy left behind by the region’s first photojournalist”.

- Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Department

Salim-Sulaiman show to benefit Aga Khan Foundation & underlines Vancouver’s rising Bollywood cachet | Vancouverdesi.com

Not only have they produced “big Bollywood hits,” from the award-winning Iqbal, to Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De! India or Abhishek Bachchan’s Dhoom. They’ve also made a name for themselves within Sufi music and have performed for the Aga Khan himself.

What they have done, what they have composed, what they have sung over the years has been appreciated by all — it’s why they have such a huge following,” said Sharma.

As a result, there’s already been a “tremendous” response to ticket sales for Saturday’s show — in which $1 from the sale of each ticket goes toward the Aga Khan Foundation — and Sharma expects it to sell out soon.

According to Sharma, the west coast kickoff show is one of only three Canadian stops, as well as six other performances throughout the United States.

With big-time Bollywood composers Salim-Sulaiman set to kick off their North American tour at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Saturday, it seems Vancouver truly is becoming one of Hindi filmdom’s A-list destinations.

“It means a lot to choose Vancouver as the opening city … That shows how much regard and respect they have for Vancouver and British Columbians and how much Vancouver has come up as a city to promote and showcase Bollywood music.

- Kamal Sharma, of Surrey-based Kamal’s Video Palace and promoter of the local Salim-Sulaiman show

According to Sharma, the west coast kickoff show is one of only three Canadian stops, as well as six other performances throughout the United States.

The brother composers aren’t the first Indian celebrities to flock to the west coast either — only last month the so-called King of Hindi Film, Shah Rukh Khan, alongside Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan, chose Vancouver as the only Canadian stop on their North American tour, SLAM 2014, which was also hot on the heels of the Times of India Film Awards that came to Vancouver in April 2013.

According to Sharma, who compares Salim-Sulaiman to Indian composer A.R. Rahman — known worldwide for his work on the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack — the musical duo are “the first Ismaili composers and singers who have made it really big in Bollywood.”

Salim-Sulaiman will also be performing alongside Indian singers Shweta Pandit, Raj Pandit, Indian Idol winner Vipul Mehta and Shiamak Davar’s Vancouver dance team. Tickets range from $35 to $200 and can be purchased online at vtixonline.com or in person at Kamal’s Video Palace.

“What they have done, what they have composed, what they have sung over the years has been appreciated by all — it’s why they have such a huge following, as a result, there’s already been a “tremendous” response to ticket sales for Saturday’s show — in which $1 from the sale of each ticket goes toward the Aga Khan Foundation.

The west coast kickoff show [Vancouver] is one of only three Canadian stops, as well as six other performances throughout the United States.

About Salim & Sulaiman

SS LiveToday Salim and Sulaiman are among Bollywood’s hottest music directors, and everyone is dancing to their tunes. By incorporating western, folk, Hindustani and Sufi influences to their music, the duo has managed to enthrall audiences across the world and not only keep up with the changing face of India’s film industry, but also help redefine it.

When they aren’t taking over Mumbai’s B-town, they’re composing jingles for television commercials of India’s leading brands including Visa, Raymond and Pepsi; or producing albums for a long list of artists such as Adnan Sami, Voodoo Rapper, Style Bhai, Shweta Shetty and many more. The Indian audience also identifies television channel Sony and hit shows including Bigg Boss and Khatron ka Khiladi (Fear Factor) by the music created by this duo. They have previously been seen on many shows including Chak De Bacche (9X), Sa Re Ga Ma Grand Finale (Zee) and even been the face for Raymond Suitings. This year Indian Idol 5 puts them in the spotlight with Salim on the panel of judges in search for India’s next singing superstar. If the fan following and regular additions to their awards list (Filmfare, Zee Cine, Screen, IIFA) are anything to go by, Salim and Sulaiman have earned the respect and adoration of both the audiences and the film industry in India. Winning an award at New York’s Syracuse International Film Festival for Fashion….. nation last year for Nickelodeon USA’s show Wonder Pets! only serves as proof of their immense talent and diversity as music directors in a worldwide context.

Sons of composer and veteran of the Telugu film industry in South India, Sadruddin Merchant, Salim and Sulaiman’s love for music couldn’t wait. While at school, Salim insisted on learning the piano, finally mastering it at the Trinity School of Music in London; Sulaiman took up tabla, and was mentored by masters such as Taufiq Qureshi and tabla prodigy Ustad Zakir Hussain. And the song may have come later, but three and a half decades back, in true Bollywood style: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

While the Merchants of Bollywood continually strive to create magic through their music, what’s next is anybody’s guess. Whether it’s Bollywood, Hollywood, Television or Advertisements – you can be sure that it will command our attention. And the rest, as we aren’t warned often enough, is the future.

About Ambassador Andrew Bennett

bennett-bioDr. Andrew P.W. Bennett is a public servant and academic with an extensive educational background in history, political science, and religious studies. He received a Bachelor of Arts in History (1st Class Honours) from Dalhousie University in 1995, a Master of Arts in History from McGill University in 1997, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Edinburgh in 2002.

Dr. Bennett has worked for the Privy Council Office, Export Development Canada and Natural Resources Canada in a wide variety of analytical, research and corporate roles. He has also held roles as a Scholar Expert on the Americas Desk with Oxford Analytica and as a Researcher with the University of Edinburgh’s Institute on Governance where he focused on the process of devolution in Scotland.

About Pamela Klassen

UofT - pamela-klassenI am Professor in the Department for the Study of Religion and have been at U of T since 1997. Overall, my research and teaching is in conversation with currents in religious studies, anthropology of religion, critical theories of secularism, postcolonial, feminist and gender theory, and North American religious history.

Another ongoing area of my research involves issues of religion and public life. My co-edited publication, After Pluralism: Reimagining Religious Engagement, brings together a range of scholars concerned with how the ideal of “religious pluralism” has shaped the recognition of what counts as religious in scholarly, state, and popular contexts. I direct Religion in the Public Sphere, an interdisciplinary initiative at U of T, and am a strand leader in the Religion and Diversity Project based at the University of Ottawa.

In Fall 2014 I am teaching a new course called “Museums and Material Religion”, in conjunction with my colleague Ajay Rao in Historical Studies at UTM. Several of the class meetings will be held at the Royal Ontario Museum. In the winter term, I am teaching a graduate course entitled “Genealogies of Christianity” which is open to advanced undergraduates with my permission. I will also be team- teaching a full-year interdisciplinary Big Ideas first-year course, “The Internet: Saving Civilization or Trashing the Planet.”

Ruth Marshall

UofT -ruth-marshallRuth Marshall received her DPhil in Politics from Oxford University, and joined both the Department for the Study of Religion and Political Science in 2008, after having spent 8 years living and researching in West Africa. She is the author of Political Spiritualities: The Pentecostal Revolution in Nigeria (U. Chicago Press, 2009) and numerous scholarly articles on the study of the political implications of Pentecostalism and postcolonial politics in West Africa. Her research and teaching are interdisciplinary, drawing on critical theory, political science, political philosophy, study of religion, anthropology, African and postcolonial studies. In 2013-14 she was a Faculty Fellow at the Jackman Humanities Institute.

I’m currently interested in the contemporary nexus between religion and politics and the challenge of clearing an analytical space in which the political productivity of religious discourse and practice may be recognized and analyzed non-reductively. I have two ongoing empirical research projects, one funded by a grant from the Social Science Research Council (NY, NY) that investigates prayer as a form of political praxis, and one funded by the SSHRC, studying the political implications of the evangelization of Europe and North America by Pentecostals from the Global South. I am working on a new book, Speaking in Tongues: Religion and the Call of the Political, that examines the renewed ethico-political force of religious language in the public sphere, and the political challenge that global revivalism poses to democratic forms of life. Critically reflecting on the problematic treatment of radical religious ‘otherness’ by contemporary political theory, I explore the possibilities and limits of a post-secular politics of translation for articulating a new relationship between the religious and the political.

Melissa S. Williams

Melissa S. Williams is Professor of Political Science and founding Director of the Centre for Ethics at the University of Toronto. She is also Editor of NOMOS, the Yearbook of the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy. Williams teaches in the history of Western political thought, contemporary democratic theory, feminist theory, American political thought, and ethics in the public sphere.

Williams’s research is predominantly in contemporary democratic theory; it frequently addresses core concepts in political philosophy through the lens of group-structured inequality, social and political marginalization, and cultural and religious diversity. Her first book, Voice, Trust and Memory: Marginalized Groups and the Failings of Liberal Representation (Princeton University Press, 1998), develops a theoretical defense of descriptive representation for historically marginalized groups. It won the Foundations of Political Theory Section’s award for the best first book in political philosophy. More recent work has addressed the relationship between peace and justice in the liberal theory of toleration; conceptions of citizenship in an era of globalization; and justice for indigenous peoples. Williams currently has two book projects under way: Equality, for the Routledge Series on Concepts in Political Philosophy; and Reconstructing Impartiality, which begins from feminist and difference-based critiques of liberal impartiality and seeks to develop an alternative account of “situated” or “contextual” impartiality within law-governed relationships. She has published thirty articles on these and other topics in Political Theory, the Canadian Journal of Political Science, numerous edited volumes, and other international journals.

Williams was Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Center for Ethics and the Professions at Harvard University (1996-97), Visiting Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam (2000), and Laurance S. Rockefeller Visiting Professor for Distinguished Teaching at the Center for Human Values at Princeton University (2000-2001). She was recently elected to the Council of the American Political Science Association.
