Ismaili Institutions for Canada: Narratives of Expression: Rethinking identity and music in Muslim discourseExcerpt: At the heart of this program, was a roundtable discussion held by the academics along with artists, Salim & Sulaiman of Bollywood as well as Ali Ramzi and Hamin Honari of Qalandar. The roundtable sought to facilitate a dialogue that offered the audience new modes of thinking and articulating narratives of inclusivity in the wider community. There exists a variety of diverse ways in which individuals use music and these artists spoke about their experience regarding music making and the impact it has in popular culture. The artists also raised important points about the responsibility of representation and the complexity of labeling music within specific confines.  This discussion demonstrated that identity and music share characteristics of fluidity- we are whom we are in intimate connection with those amongst and against whom we continually redefine ourselves.

On 30th November 2014, the Association for the Study of Ginans, led by Chairman Pyarali Jiwa, hosted a seminar at Manchester with resounding success. Participants came from Eastbourne & Hastings, Birmingham, Bolton, Burnley, Leicester, Leeds-Bradford, Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, and members of the Board from London.

The programme consisted of speakers on Ginans: Anis Attenborough, Karim Andani, and Karima Bata, a Gujarati workshop by Nizar Mawani, and a demonstration of the Ginan Library by Pyarali Jiwa. After lunch, Ginans and Qasidas were beautifully rendered by talented young and not-so-young recitors and included some items with music. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the memorable event.

Navine Jafferali and the staff of Birch Hotel provided the venue and all the meals and refreshments.

We are grateful to local members who assisted with organising the event: Nadia Valliani, Shamim Kooverjee, Masuma Jessani, Karim Andani, Salma Ladha, photographer Mohamed Mitha, Farid Meghji who helped with the PA system.

The next Ginan seminars will be in London and Paris in 2015 followed by a conference at the University of Mumbai in India later in the year.

Ariel Chen on Hussein Janmohamed at the IB World Student Conference

The opening ceremony then commenced – one of the most extraordinary opening ceremonies I’ve been to, but no doubt, one of the best. After a few introductions and speeches from important people and the organizers of the IBWSC, Hussein Janmohamed took the stage.

Three words – he was phenomenal.

Hussein Janmohamed -The IB World Student Conference - UBCExpecting a speech, he surprised me by starting to sing. I was deeply amazed and engrossed in his deep, strong voice and to my surprise, the lyrics sounded familiar.

They were verses from the Quran. I know, for I caught a few words from the hymn and they were similar to those uttered in prayers by the Islamic community in my country.

Hussein was a choral conductor at UBC. He related the concept of sustainability, peace and harmony through his forte, music. It was no where near an attempt – it was pure success.

Even if you have a small voice, when you sing with others, your voice is amplified.'”

- Hussein Janmohamed

I thought, this draws parallel to our attempts on promoting the concept of sustainability. We might be small, or young, or seemingly insignificant – but if we stand together, like how we are now in this conference, despite being of different culture and heritage, we are able to create huge impacts to save our future.

Saint Petersburg (Russian: Санкт-Петербург) is the second largest city in Russia, politically incorporated as a federal city. It is located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. In 1914 the name of the city was changed from Saint Petersburg to Petrograd (Russian: Петроград), in 1924 to Leningrad (Russian: Ленинград), and in 1991, back to Saint Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on May 27, 1703. Between 1713–1728 and 1732–1918, Saint Petersburg was the imperial capital of Russia. In 1918, the central government bodies moved from Saint Petersburg (then named Petrograd) to Moscow. It is Russia’s 2nd largest city after Moscow. Saint Petersburg is a major European cultural center, and also an important Russian port on the Baltic Sea.

Saint Petersburg is often described as the most Western city of Russia, as well as its cultural capital. It is the northernmost city in the world with a population of over one million. The Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint Petersburg is also home to The Hermitage, one of the largest art museums in the world. A large number of foreign consulates, international corporations, banks, and other businesses are located in Saint Petersburg.

MissMalini.com | Salim Merchant Opens Up About His North America Charity Tour

$

Music Director Salim Merchant of the Salim-Sulaiman duo is literally on cloud nine after the stupendous success of the Salim Sulaiman Live 2014 concert tour held in November 2014 in North America.

The success of this concert tour is all the more special for the composer duo since it raised a lot of funds for charity.

This isn’t all, as they were also white-hatted by the Calgary Mayor to being honored with the Congregational Certificate of Merit from the Governor’s office in New York to even getting a day named after them.

In a freewheeling chat, Salim Merchant talks more about the various merits and recognition that came their way during this tour and also gives us a first-hand account of the fans’ response to them.

Excerpts from the interview:

One hears that you raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in this charity tour. That sounds wonderful.

Salim Merchant (SM): (Smiles) Yes, we raised a lot of money in Calgary and Houston amongst other places. In fact in Atlanta, we even donated to the NGOs like Raksha and Vibha who support women and children. We did this because we genuinely believe in giving back to the society. Apart from this we also did a lot of workshops for upcoming musicians and singers in the United States and Canada which was personally quite satisfying as we shared our personal experiences with them especially encouraging them to follow our roots and our own musical traditions despite living in the US, which will make them truly unique since they will have a great mix of Western and Indian music.

Please carry on.

SM: We also collaborated with a lot of local artistes like the Ismail Choir in Vancouver which was a great way of exchanging musical traditions. Though so many Indians living in the US do not really speak Hindi, they can sing Hindi songs beautifully and it was my mission to give a boost to that. It is also a testimony to the fact that music cuts across language and cultural barriers and at the same time is so powerful that it lets you connect to your roots.

Spirit of Service: Salim-Sulaiman win over USA & Canada with their charity tour | Bollywood Hungama News Network

It was really full of incredible and prestigious moments …

The highlight of this tour was that apart from entertaining fans from all over and selling out venues all across, we also raised a lot of money for charity.

… I would really have to thank the Almighty, and definitely all our fans.

For instance, the Calgary concert raised about 40,000-60,000 Canadian Dollars for the Aga Khan Foundation.

It was the largest ever Indian Concert in Calgary with an attendance of almost 5,000 comprising of people not only from the city but also from other cities who drove all the way to Calgary to witness the show.

It was quite overwhelming since we did not expect this kind of love and affection from the fans.

The Houston concert on the other hand raised USD 63,000 for the Aga Khan Foundation.

What really happened in the concert? A fusion of Bollywood and some timeless music?
[…] we also had a devotional section comprising of soft and soothing Sufi music since many of our Sufi songs like Bismillah and Ali Maula are quite popular with the listeners and honestly it is indeed quite amazing to see that a lot of people love listening to devotional songs!

Seems like you are quite content with how the musical scene looks for you.
I would really have to thank the Almighty, and definitely all our fans. … I have realized that that the songs we did over the past 5-6 years have a certain timeless quality and the inherent timelessness comes out even better when it is played unplugged. When the world is getting into electronics, it is almost like we are returning to our roots.

Afzal Huda featured in New York Times: Art and Outrage - Slide ShowThe subway tunnels are havens for restive artists and designers. The West Bank wall separating Palestinian territory from Israel, like the Berlin Wall before it, has become a public canvas on which frustrated people express pain and longing through word and image. In LOVE WINS: Palestinian Perseverance Behind Walls (Olive Branch Press, paper, $22), this work is brought into focus through the images of Afzal Huda, a Canadian photographer and filmmaker, who spent three weeks during the summer of 2011 shooting pictures along the wall and interviewing those who live in its shadow. The title is taken from a slogan carefully painted on one piece of the imposing concrete. Over half of the book consists of photos of Palestinians and a few Israeli soldiers going about their daily routines; the rest show dozens of loosely scrawled and ambitiously painted messages that zero in on the theme of hope.
