Soprano Maya Kherani stars in Houston Grand Opera's production of River of LightAn opera with real Houston power: Award-winning author and HGO bring city’s immigrant truths to life

A young, brilliant Indian woman falls in love with an American man, moves to Houston and falls almost equally in love with the city. She seems to embrace her new culture and life whole-heartedly until the birth of her daughter, when she begins to realize that maybe, for her child’s sake, she must make enough room in her whole heart to hold both her old and new culture.

Soprano Maya Kherani stars in Houston Grand Opera's production of River of LightThis is a real life dilemma that many immigrants face, but could it also be the dramatic fodder for opera? […]

Excerpt:The opera traced the dilemma faced by a newlywed and successful executive Meera (played by Maya Kherani) in passing on the Indian culture and heritage to her daughter. The celebration of victory of good over evil, as signified by the Indian Light festival of Diwali brought the final scene of the Opera to a standing ovation from the crowd.

The annual Milad un Nabi (Birthday of the Prophet pbuh) returned to Parliament Hill on February 11th, after more than a decade of being hosted at other locations. Given the recent events, this was quite timely as a gesture of trust between Parliament and Ottawa’s Muslim communities. Conservative Member of Parliament and Chief Government Whip John Duncan hosted the event in Parliament’s Historic Railway Committee Room where the iconic “The Fathers of Confederation” painting hangs.

[…] Members of Ottawa’s Ismaili Muslim Community were also involved in the event, both with the President of the Ismaili Council for Ottawa, Bashir Surani, in attendance and a traditional song in honour of the Prophet (pbuh) known as the Salam sung in Arabic, Urdu and English by Ismaili community members Zahira Dhalwani, Naazish Shariff, and Rayanna Imaam Shamji.

Even famed restaurateur Vikram Vij was apparently starstruck when he first met Mrs. Noorbanu Nimji.

Calgary cookbook author Noorbanu Nimji has sold more than a quarter million copies of her cookbooks. (Julie Van Rosendaal). Calgary food tour guide Karen Anderson recalls the time she went to introduce him to her mentor at his Vancouver restaurant.

“I already know who she is,” he gushed. “I have her cookbooks!”

But 80-year-old Calgarian Noorbanu Nimji has sold over 260,000 copies of her books. It was Anderson who introduced me to Nimji. The two met in the ’90s after Anderson took one of Noorbanu’s classes at the Cookbook Company Cooks, and she’s been learning from her ever since.
