Event - April 11 | Trinity St. Paul's Centre | World Premier of Hussein Janmohamed's New Composition: Sun on WaterSun on Water originated while Hussein was living at the late Doris McCarthy’s home and studio, Fool’s Paradise, through the Doris McCarthy Artist-in-Residence Program of the Ontario Heritage Trust.

Sun on Water finds its inspiration in the mystery of winter sunrises on Toronto’s Scarborough Bluffs. The colours of the rising sun over Lake Ontario revealed a palpable silence and yearning from which the music emerged. The piece, written specially for Toronto’s Amadeus Choir, is for a capella choir and Tibetan singing bowl. The texts and musical influences come from Western sacred choral traditions, Middle Eastern rhythms, Hindu and Indic Ismaili Muslim devotion.

Hussein Janmohamed premierSun on Water begins quietly as deep waters rumble underneath. Sonic layers reflect the yearning of the sun and water, like lover and beloved, for each other. A burst of sun breaks forth. Yet, as the sun’s rays shimmer on the surface of the lake, the deep water still echoes their mutual yearning for ultimate union.

Surya
Sun, Supreme Light.

Nayno(n) se nayn milavo, mere Saheb
Let my eye meet with yours, my Lord/Master/Beloved

De profundis clamavi ad te Domine:
Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee, O Lord.

Domine exaudi vocem meam
Lord, hear my voice.

Majida Boga Devani: Creating a Geometric Kitchen

Designer Majida Boga Devani wanted to create a kitchen that would both honour the historic neighbourhood where it’s located, and celebrate modern design as well.

Clean, bright, open, natural, inviting and raw: that was the framework for architect and designer Majida Boga Devani as she planned the kitchen in her home, a new build that she and her husband, Alkarim Devani, created as a partnership with his company, Beyond Homes, and hers, Building Bloc Design. The home is set in Calgary’s Richmond-Knob Hill, one of the city’s older neighbourhoods.

The setting was downtown Houston, a place full of commotion, chaos, and concrete. The perfect ambiance for the daring production, “A Simple Rebirth,” that welcomed their first show night on Thursday with an open heart. Presented at Notsuoh Theater, the dramatic presentation depicted the struggles women face in their lives and left audience members fully aware of the many misfortunes the female gender has experienced. Like most things in life, the presentation shined to a brighter future for those present. Although the presentation, “A Simple Rebirth,” was vivid, multifaceted, and thought-provoking, it not only brought awareness but illuminated light to the importance of celebrating new beginnings, bravery, and the importance of honor.
